Our Furry New Friends

We had 4 beautiful Greyhounds come to visit from the Three Rivers Greyhound Rescue League. Thank you to all the volunteers who shared these amazing animals with us and to all who came out to support this cause! Enjoy all of the pictures on our Flickr site!

THE GREYHOUNDS ARE COMING...THE GREYHOUNDS ARE COMING!

This Saturday, Jan. 29th, stop by the library between 1-3 to meet some of the Three Rivers Greyhound Rescue Dogs.  Learn all about these gentle giants that are often called "The 45- mph Couch Potatoes!"

Up and Coming

We've been pretty busy trying out some new programs at the library, and we've got a couple more in store for you!  We recently launched our ABC Play open play hour on Fridays from 10:30-11:30.  Think kids, toys and fun!  It seems to be a big hit and you should stop by if you have a chance.  We've been kicking around the idea of starting a "Kinder Craft Club" for ages 3-6 with a parent.  Keep a look out in the coming months for it and other new programs.

Book Flicks

When I hear a children's book is being turned into a movie, I'm initially very excited.  Then I begin to worry, really worry that they will ruin a beloved tale and turn kids off from it altogether.  Either that, or they will change the story so much that it becomes virtually unrecognizable once Hollywood gets done with it.  Having said that, I'm interested to hear that The Giver by Lois Lowry is going to the big screen.  It is supposedly i9n pre-production so no release date has been set.  Here are a few other children's tales that are  are rumored, in the process, or are becoming movies making their way to a theatre near you (eventually).

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Adventures of Tin Tin by Herge
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) by J.K. Rowling
Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
The Witches by Roald Dahl
Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss

Battle for All?

As many of you may know, each year the Moon Library sponsers a Battle of the Books tournament for 5th grade students in the Moon and Rhema schools.  This has become a huge endeavor that kids, parents, teachers and librarians look forward to each year.  I've been throwing around the idea of having a Family Book Battle for younger kids, and am wondering if anyone has any thoughts?  Could be super fun!

Doll Winter Tea Party

Today we had our Doll Winter Tea Party.  The girls all dressed up in party clothes and brought their favorite doll.  We had tea and juice, lavender cupcakes, spun sugar sandwiches and brownies.  We made princess bookmarks and took lots and lots of pictures.  All of the girls introduced their dolls and had lots of fun playing with each other.  Check out the photos on our Flickr page!

Awards, awards!

Yesterday was my all-time favorite day of the year in the world of books.  The American Library Association (ALA) announced the winners of their Youth Media Awards.  The Newbery Award went to Moon Over Manifest, by debut author Clare Vanderpool.  The Caldecott was awarded to A Sick Day For Amos McGee written and illustrated by Philip and Erin Stead.  Debut authors for both awards!  Amazing!

Check out this link for a full list of the winners!

Got Flickr?

We have a new Flickr account for Moon Township Public Library Children's Department!  You should see a Flickr box with images on the side of this blog.  Follow that link to see pictures from various programs, events and story times!  This is a great way to share with dads, grandparents and friends, and anyone else who missed out on all the fun.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/21324006@N07/5306611213/

Happy New Year!

My New Year's Resolution is to revamp our blog!  We have tons of new things happening at the library.  January brings our new ABC Open Play group.  Kids birth and up with an adult caregiver can stop by the library anytime between 10:30-11:30 on Fridays to play and socialize.  We have lots of great new toys and educational materials for you to have fun with.  I can tell you that I had alot of fun shopping for them!  We also have our new Kid's Advisory Board.  All students in grades 3-5 can join this club to meet once a month and brainstorm ideas to make our library an even cooler place!  We'll also be hosting  Three Rivers Greyhound Rescue as they bring some dogs for a meet and greet on 1/29 at 1:00pm.  Stop in and find out what else we have going on for the new year!
